What is a "Christmas in July" celebration in Australia?

Historically, Australia has inherited lots of its culture from its colonial past for example a hot roast meal on a freezing cold Christmas Day in England just made sense and the tradition was naturally adopted in Australia for its Christmas celebrations but unlike England, it's summer, so its bloody hot!

Just consider this fact. Australia is the world’s driest inhabited continent on earth. So please place yourself into this environment as Australians celebrate Christmas sweating away while devouring their hot meal, all while they are being bombarded with winter themed movies, winter Christmas songs and winter news and literature from North America and Europe. To an Aussie, the concept of celebrating Christmas in the cold is a novel idea. An Aussie Christmas is very far away from the festive atmosphere associated with a snowy landscape, cozy fireplaces, and traditional Christmas food and decorations.

However, all is not lost for Australians as they are an innovative bunch and not ones to let the northern hemisphere inhabitants get one over them for good old "Cold Christmas" celebration.

The Aussies do have a cold winter, especially in the more southern parts and higher parts of Australia. So the natural and obvious progression is for Australians to enjoy a traditional winter Christmas in their winter, which falls in July.

So Christmas in July it is. Ho ho ho ho ho!. Go and grab your jumper and tracky dacks!

"Christmas in July" gained momentum in the 1980s and has since become a common occurrence, with winter-themed Christmas events, decorations, and even special meals being organized during the month of July.

Many businesses such as restaurants and communities focused on tourism use "Christmas in July" to help promote the event as part of their marketing and promotional activities to cash in on the growing theme.

Today, Christmas in July has become a playful and festive concept in various parts of the world, serving as an opportunity to enjoy holiday-themed activities, exchange gifts, and indulge in winter-inspired treats, even during the warmer months.
